Project Goals
Melanated Group Midwifery Care (MGMC) is a randomized controlled trial (asking does this work?) and a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial (asking how does this work?) testing a new model of care for Black birthing people.
It is a patient-centered and community-engaged project, and it is composed of four evidence-based interventions:
Racially concordant care Black women receive prenatal and postnatal care from a team of Black midwives, nurses and doulas.
Group prenatal care Prenatal care appointments take place within a group setting of pregnant Black women.
Care coordination A Black nurse and social worker helps MGMC moms navigate the healthcare system while pregnant and makes sure MGMC moms get all their needs addressed.
Postpartum doula support A Black postpartum doula provides in-home care to MGMC moms for 12 months after giving birth.
